E = Encourage

Step E stands for Encourage. In this Step, children are introduced to the idea of working towards goals or facing our fears gradually, one step at a time.  Children learn that big goals or even scary (or fearful) tasks can be accomplished if broken down into small, manageable steps.

In this video, a parent talks to her son about a time when he was feeling overwhelmed in his new karate class. Instead of giving up, he was able to stick with it and not get discouraged. She discusses how as parents, they try to catch those moments of persistence  in their children, and to acknowledge these moments with their children.

In this video of Step E, a parent helps her child brainstorm and break down a goal into a series of steps (in this case, learning to tie his shoes). The importance of using interpersonal rewards is also highlighted.
