F = Feelings

Step F stands for Feelings. In this Step, children learn to recognize a wide range of feelings in themselves and others as they build their “feelings language”. Although all feelings are OK to have, some of the ways we show our feelings are “thumbs up” (e.g. asking for a hug, having a cry) and some ways are “thumbs down” (e.g. yelling at or hitting someone).

In this video, a parent shares how the Fun FRIENDS program reminds her to look for opportunities throughout the day to increase her son’s feelings words. She uses book characters to talk about different feelings, and encourages her son think about what the characters might be thinking about (or imagining in their head) to lead to those feelings.
