I = I Can Try

Step I stands for I Can Try. In this step, children learn about paying attention to their thoughts (or for younger children, what they are imagining or picturing in their head).  Some thoughts can be overly pessimistic and focus on the negative or worst-case situations, and in the Fun FRIENDS program these are called “red thoughts” (e.g. I can’t do it),  “Green Thoughts” (e.g. I can try), on the other hand, are helpful, more positive things we can tell ourselves to help us feel more confident and brave.

In this video, parents talk about how ‘red’ and ‘green’ thoughts helped their son when he was learning to ride a bike for the first time.
