R = Relax

Step R stands for Relax. In this Step, children learn about the importance of relaxation; when our body gets tense or tight or nervous, there are things we can do calm our bodies down and feel better.  Although they can be uncomfortable sometimes, feelings in our bodies aren’t actually unsafe and they don’t last forever. One simple strategy is taking some nice, slow breaths - in Fun FRIENDS this is called “milkshake breathing”. 

In this video, a parent shows how she practices milkshake breathing with her son on a regular basis, and explores different situations when calming down his body can be helpful for him.
